White People Tears… Literally

I was rather shocked to see a certain trailer pop up on my Tumblr feed. MTV is known to have some weird ass tv shows (Next and 16 and Pregnant,  to name a few). But this documentary has got to be one of the craziest filmed compilations I have ever seen.

So, as you can see, MTV has definitely gone off the grid of sanity. I was going to say that this is a new perspective on race issues and discussing race, but it really isn’t. My entire life I have been told to not question my teachers on history, no matter how incorrect it is. And for what? So little Susie and Tommy don’t get upset? So that their tears don’t litter the floor?
The trailer gives sound bites for a few kids, one guy who said “it’s like if I say something wrong, I’m racist.” And a girl who said, “I don’t want to hurt anyone.” Both of these statements infuriated me. You complain about being called racist for picking at an entire race without doing any studies on the people or why there are these instances. That makes you a racist. And of course, sweetheart, you don’t mean to hurt anyone. You poor, frail white woman who gets to be shielded from anything controversial in any way. You don’t mean to be racist, nor do you want to be, but due to the system of white supremacy and your desire to not challenge your comfortable little life, you are more than likely going to be some degree of racist or xenophobia.

And the comments in the video! “There’s no such thing as white privilege” and “black people are the ones committing the most crimes and are the most unemployed.” Wow. MTV certainly got all the racists up in arms.

Nobody has come to the people of color who have been affected by the things going on in the country. All I’ve seen in the media is a bunch of white people dissecting white people. Mexican people get called rapists? Let’s go to Susie so she can tell us he didn’t mean all of it and that he was still rather accurate. Charleston shooting? Tommy can tell us about how he couldn’t possibly be racist, because, oh golly, there are no more racists in the country.
This is where we need to disengage. I will not be watching this documentary, because I have seen nothing but this my entire life. We have been conditioned to be empathetic to the sensitivity of white people by shoving down the harsh truths that people of color have to face every day of our lives. It becomes something that we have normalized so much that this is treated as something new. This documentary is nothing new at all. This documentary is simply a reiteration that white people’s feelings are above the feelings of people of color.
What are your thoughts? Will you watch this documentary? Leave me a comment and let me know, and as always, thanks for reading!

  1. I completely understand where you’re coming from, and the trailer does deliver that idea. But I watched the movie and loved it. Basically Jose was making white people acknowledge their privilege. The documentary isn’t really for people of color. Its for white people to watch and learn and in the process, they get uncomfortable. (You know how it is). I recommend that you watch it.
